Tiang says the MRI machine will benefit the community.
Sibu folk no longer have to travel far for specialised diagnostic procedures, as Hospital Sibu in Sarawak will be equipped with a refurbished Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine.
Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Datuk Michael Tiang said the Health Ministry (MOH) had approved the MRI machine for the hospital.
“The machine is a donation by Sarawak Heart Foundation (YJS), costing RM2mil.
“It was approved on Oct 25 last year.”
He said MOH had also approved upgrading of the existing site to facilitate the smooth installation and operation of the machine.
The project is scheduled to commence early this year.
Tiang said this would take about five months to complete.
“The availability of an MRI machine in Hospital Sibu will bring about immense benefits to people in Sibu, Sarikei, Mukah and Kapit.
“It will reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for specialised diagnostic procedures,” he stressed.
Tiang said the project was part of the government’s commitment to improving the health system and infrastructure in Sibu because health was the backbone of economic growth.
“The MRI machine reflects our commitment to continuously invest in the well-being and healthcare infrastructure of our community,” he added.
Separately, Tiang urged the people to continue being vigilant due to the surge in Covid-19 cases in the country.
However, he said despite the increase in cases, the situation was still under control and was not burdening existing health facilities. — By ANDY CHUA
