IT IS not easy even for an adult to complete a 50km ride through the hilly roads of Penang on a mountain bike.
However, 10-year-old Muhammad Iman Darwisy Muhammad Iqbal achieved this feat during the City Ride 2024, organised by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
He clocked under three hours with an average speed of 22km/h.
“It was exhausting but it’s an accomplishment. I do not ride often but I’m active in sports, and that has helped to build my muscles and stamina,” said Muhammad Iman from Jelutong, after the event.
He was among hundreds of cyclists who took part in the 12th edition of the City Ride, which started from Lebuh Pantai to Teluk Bahang and back.
Along the way, they passed by Lebuh Light, Jalan Burma, Tanjong Tokong, Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi and turned back at the Teluk Bahang Forest Reserve.
Accompanying him was his grandfather Mohd Ali Awang, 63, who also completed the ride.
He said Muhammad Iman only started riding last year.
“He joins me for rides along the cycling lane from Jelutong to Queensbay Mall about once a month.
“I hope his strong spirit to face challenges in sports will be reflected in his studies and future career,” said Mohd Ali.
Another cyclist Sam Ong, 47, rode his beloved pink Colnago Master Olympic, dubbed the dream bike of the 1990s.
“It’s in pristine condition. This is an outstanding masterpiece with all its original parts, including the Campagnolo groupset and a customised steel frame.
“I have over 10 bicycles at home and this is my favourite to bring out for fun events.
“Today, it is worth almost RM20,000,” said Ong.
Present to flag off the participants were Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, who also joined the ride.
