Weaving a tale of love

The Chinese New Year-themed webfilm will certainly remind viewers to say ‘I love you’ to their loved ones.

MR DIY’s Chinese New Year webfilm “Wo Ai Ni” is sparking a wave of love across the country.

Within a few days of its launch on the home improvement retailer’s social media platforms, the film had garnered over seven million views, showing how it resonated with Malaysian audiences.

In the five-minute 23-second film, a boy named Hong and his family gather for their annual Chinese New Year reunion in front of their grandfather’s home.

The grandfather, a strict former headmaster who usually instils a disciplined, military-like routine, surprises everyone by being unusually warm with his family.

He gives compliments, discusses his daughter’s mental health and even joins in a trendy dance with his grandchildren.

Concerned about his odd behaviour, the family intervenes, only to discover that the grandfather has been seeking advice on love through an artificial intelligence (AI) programme.

The film concludes with the grandfather explaining his actions and expressing love to his family with a heartfelt “I love you all”.

Explaining the rationale of the webfilm, MR DIY Group head of marketing Alex Goh said, “This Chinese New Year, we want to remind Malaysians that the most important thing is love.

“And one of the simplest, most meaningful ways to demonstrate love is to simply say ‘wo ai ni’ or ‘I love you’ to loved ones.

“It’s a phrase that holds so much meaning and magic, and immediately makes a profound difference to an ordinary day or festive celebration.

“Our goal is to celebrate and promote love and compassion among Malaysians, recognising that anything is possible with love.”

The webfilm is available on MR DIY’s social media platforms.
