WATER supply may be back after the scheduled disruption but many Penangites are still keeping their containers filled just in case another crisis looms.

Hameediyah Restaurant director Muhammad Riyaaz Syed Ibrahim had rented 40 large tanks to store water for both his restaurants in Lebuh Campbell and in Sungai Ara.

He said he would keep the tanks for the time being.

“We are still using the stored water and will return the tanks later,” he said.

Than Hsiang Temple canteen manager Neoh Chee Jin said the temple hoped to receive donations of pails as their old buckets had worn out.

“Many people are still keeping their pails as they are worried that there may be another water disruption,” said Neoh.

Last week, water supply to more than 590,000 consumers was halted to enable the replacement of two giant valves at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant and ancillary work at 22 other locations.

Repair work was completed ahead of schedule, with water supply to some affected areas returning sooner than expected.

During this period, a clamp on an underwater pipe in Sungai Prai became dislodged after a fall in water pressure.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the aged underwater pipe was beyond repair.

He said the next course of action was to divert pipes across the Ampang Jajar bridge as a temporary measure.
