Local favourites durian, dabai back in Sibu market

Langsat and dabai found in abundance at Sibu Central Market.

JUST when you thought Sarawak’s fruit season had ended in November, another has kicked in.

Season Two, as some have coined it, began in the first week of January.

Durian, langsat and dabai (black olive) are aplenty at Sibu Central Market.

Sellers are pricing their durian between RM5 and RM15 each. Bundles of five are sold from RM20 to RM25.

A kilogramme of langsat is sold for between RM10 and RM12, depending on quality.

Dabai lovers can easily get them from around RM15 to RM30, depending on quality and taste.

A durian seller at the central market who wished to be known only as John said his fruits are from Song, an upriver district about 90 minutes’ drive from Sibu.

“I get the fruits from farmers in Song as there are many orchards there.

“It is not difficult to bring durian to Sibu as the road network is good,” he said.

English lecturer Albert Tay said he was not suffering from durian fatigue and would be buying the fruit again despite still having some in his freezer.

“I still have frozen ones from early last year which I wanted to take out for my three kids when they were back home for their university semester break.

“As we were travelling to Bintulu and Miri, I didn’t have time for that,” he said.

Educationist Ting Suk Hee said durian was still her favourite fruit.

However, she did not plan to consume much for fear it would raise her blood pressure. — By ANDY CHUA
