Selangor JPJ records over 32% surge in traffic summonses

Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued a total of 349,289 summonses last year for various offences compared to 263,786 issued in 2022.

This is an increase of over 32%.

Selangor JPJ director Azrin Borhan said offences involving motorists and motorcyclists accumulated more than 150,000 summonses.

The offences include driving without a licence or with an expired licence.

“The increase in summonses can be attributed to many motorists or motorcyclists not paying enough attention to their vehicles.

“Some were negligent, driving with malfunctioning lights and not replacing worn-out and damaged tyres.

“We advise motorists to inspect their vehicles to ensure they are in good condition before starting their journey,” he said at a press conference after a joint operation at the Puchong Selatan and Damansara toll plazas.

The operation that began at 9pm involved 82 JPJ officers, 34 from the police force, 10 from the National Anti-Drug Agency, six from Litrak and 10 from PLUS.

A total of 1,807 vehicles were inspected during the operation that resulted in 735 notices being issued with 564 of them receiving summonses.

Azrin said the notices were issued for offences such as not having a valid driving licence or insurance coverage, having expired road tax or registration number plates not complying with specifications, not displaying the ‘L’ sticker and not having side mirrors.

Summonses were given for illegal modification of vehicles.

“We urge drivers to always comply with traffic rules and maintain their vehicles for their own safety and that of other road users,” he said.
