THE World Photographic Cup (WPC) Malaysia 2023 awards ceremony duly recognised winners of 10 categories that will represent the country in an Olympics-style photography competition.
In the ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur, winners from all over Malaysia received trophies and certificates of achievement.
Federation of Commercial Photographic Society Malaysia president Kuan Tan said hosting a world-class photography competition was in line with the spirit of the Olympic Games.
The competition consists of 10 categories, including commercial, digital art, nature, portraiture, photojournalism, sports and wedding, with each team permitted to submit up to three photographs for each.
He said that all the participants competed with exceptionally high levels of photography work.
The platform, he said, provided Malaysian photographers with new motivation and led to the exploration of new areas in photography production.
“It allows our photography scene to flourish, making our country’s photography profession diverse and vibrant.
“It is also an international platform for learning from and exchanging ideas with renowned photographers from around the world,” he said.
The 10th International WPC Awards in Singapore last year saw 32 countries participating.
The Malaysian national team won one gold and two silver medals with a total of five outstanding works and a total score of 35 points, securing fourth place in national team rankings.
Kuan Tan said the global WPC competition would be held in the US in April and hoped the Malaysian representatives would achieve excellent results once again.
Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Photographic Society president Ng Wei Lee said, “We hope that through this competition, we can promote the photography field and elevate the standards, allowing more people to appreciate the photographic scenery in our country.”
He also called on the Youth and Sports Ministry to allow photographers to participate in sports events for photography, allowing local photographers to accumulate experience and showcase their work.
Currently, only media personnel are permitted to take photos at certain sports events.
