LARGE sums of money will be pumped in to fund urban renewal programmes in Sibu.
“I cannot reveal the amount (yet) but a lot of money will come in to rejuvenate the town,” said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg at the United Chinese Association Sibu Division’s 2024 Chinese New Year gathering.
Abang Johari stressed that Sibu was in need of major renewal as the low-lying town faced flood and dengue woes.
“We want to restructure Sibu. I promise that I am committed to (making) Sibu like Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
“Amsterdam lies below sea level while Sibu is below river level.
“We have to get experts to draw up a plan and this is why the work will take at least 10 years.”
He said he was inspired by Singapore which had been transformed into a vibrant city.
“If Singapore can do it, Sarawak can also do it with the support of everyone,” he said.
The event was graced by Sarawak Governor Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
Also present were Abang Johari’s wife Puan Sri Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian and his wife Datin Seri Enn Ong, along with other ministers. — By ANDY CHUA
