HUNDREDS of devotees thronged Sri Maha Muneswarar temple in Brickfields to witness a “maha kumbabishegam” consecration ceremony.
At dawn, Hindu priests ascended the temple tower at Jalan Scott in Kuala Lumpur to perform prayers.
Minutes into the ceremony, sacred water was sprinkled on a “kalasam” (inverted pot) situated atop the tower before being showered on the devotees. The sacred water is believed to be able to purify worshippers from internal strife.
Devotees then extended bottles and plastic bags to collect the sacred water cascading from the top of the 127-year-old temple.
Rebuilt over 20 years on a 5,000sq ft site at a cost of RM7.5mil, the house of worship is adorned in white and gold paint.
Temple president Thanuja Arokiadass said it had received cash and in-kind donations such as building materials.
“I am grateful to God for these blessings and thankful to all devotees who have made the reconstruction of this temple and its consecration ceremony a success,” she said.
The old temple is still standing next to the new one.
A “mandalabishega pooja” (special prayers held over 48 days) is being held following the consecration ceremony.
