SUBANG Jaya City Council (MBSJ) has installed a fresh set of zebra crossings near a mall in USJ1 to replace an overhead pedestrian bridge that was demolished to make way for a traffic dispersal project.
The zebra crossing across Persiaran Subang Permai links USJ7 LRT station to Da Men Mall in Subang Jaya, Selangor.
“It was completed on Feb 25 and is now open to pedestrians,” said MBSJ Engineering Department deputy director Dr Mohd Ariffuddin Kamari.
He said MBSJ was aware of complaints that pedestrians found it difficult to cross the busy road since the overhead pedestrian bridge was demolished.
“At the same time, the contractor tasked with installing the zebra crossing also had to repair the existing road,” he added.
Another public facility that MBSJ has to manage because of the project is the relocation of a bus stop along Persiaran Subang Permai for cable works.
The project will see construction of an elevated, dedicated road for those coming from the Persiaran Subang Permai intersection to bypass traffic lights at Persiaran Kewajipan intersection and go towards the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas) and Federal Highway.
The RM51.5mil traffic dispersal project by MBSJ is now 15% complete.
It was previously reported that it would take two-and-a-half years to be completed.
On a separate matter, Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said the city council would be enhancing its food safety guidelines and green practices at all Ramadan bazaars.
“Traders cannot use staplers on food packaging this year, such as to wrap tepung pelita or to seal kuih boxes.
“We are banning the use of staplers, for health and safety reasons.
“Traders can use other materials such as lidi (bamboo stick) to seal food packaging.
“Face masks will be compulsory for traders, while customers are encouraged to bring their own food containers,” he said.
He added that polystyrene packaging and plastic straws would also be banned.
Mohd Fauzi said this after chairing MBSJ’s February full board meeting at the city council’s headquarters in USJ5, Subang Jaya.
He also announced that MBSJ would be collaborating with PETRONAS for a used cooking oil recycling campaign, with the latter to pay RM3 for every 1kg of oil collected.
This campaign will be held at four Ramadan bazaars with a high number of traders and customers – USJ4, Puchong Prima, Bandar Kinrara 5 and Puncak Jalil.
There is an increase of traders compared to last year, with 1,168 vendors trading at 25 locations this year compared to 1,144 vendors at 26 locations in 2023.
MBSJ will be having a briefing for traders on proper food handling, recycling practices, waste management and cashless transactions as well as reminders on compliance with standard operating procedures set by the city council and Health Ministry.
The briefing at MBSJ Puchong Indah Multipurpose Hall will be held across three days, until tomorrow, to cater to traders from six zones within the city.
On the dengue situation, Mohd Fauzi said: “As of epidemiology week seven (ending Feb 17), MBSJ recorded 1,993 positive cases in areas under its purview.
“This marks a 20% increase in cases compared to the same period last year.”
There are 39 dengue hotspots in MBSJ, including Taman Sri Serdang 3, Vista Impian in Taman Bukit Serdang 10, USJ3/3, Pangsapuri Mutiara Perdana in PJS7/15 and Block A38 of Flat Taman Puchong Permai.
