Embrace oil-free cooking for its health benefits, consumer group says

PEOPLE should embrace oil-free cooking for better health and well-being, says Perak Consumers’ Association (PCA) president Abd Rahman Said Alli.

“I believe people can change their lifestyle.

“Reducing fat, salt and calorie intake will make a huge difference in our lives,” he said after a programme on cooking without oil organised by PCA in Bercham, Ipoh.

Abd Rahman said oil-free cooking also promoted weight loss.

“I believe such a cooking method can be adopted by both vegetarian and non-vegetarians.

Abd Rahman said he came across oil-free cooking through Dr Bimal Chhajer’s book Food for Reversing Heart Disease – Science And Art of Living’s Zero Oil Cookbook.

“Dr Bimal, from India, promotes zero oil cooking to prevent heart disease,” he added.

About 20 people participated in the programme where restaurant owner and chef S. Balachandran taught them how to saute and stir-fry using water instead of oil.

The participants also did some cooking on their own under Balachandran’s guidance before taking the food home.

Abd Rahman said Balachandran had 36 years of experience in the culinary and food industry, and owned a culinary school.

“He has worked abroad for about 25 years in seven countries, including as a personal chef for royalty,” added Abd Rahman.
