The Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) have entered an agreement to continue enhancing the exchange of information, knowledge and expertise between the two countries in the field of science, technology, innovation and economy.

They signed a supplementary memorandum of understanding (MoU) that was formalised between ASM president Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen and KAST president Prof Ook Joon Yoo, witnessed by the scientific fraternity from both academies.

Tengku Mohd Azzman said the MoU reflected their dedication to strengthening the collaboration between ASM and KAST.

“As we renew this commitment, we aim to deepen the bonds of cooperation between both countries,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prof Ook said, “With the extension of this MoU, KAST aspires for it to be a cornerstone for future collaborations, encompassing the exchange of scientific insights and the strengthening of networks among exceptional scientists.”

The initial MoU was sealed on Feb 11, 1999, where it had outlined a collaborative framework between ASM and KAST.

Noteworthy among these collaborations was the 2013 joint organisation of an International Workshop on Science Literacy at Seoul National University, South Korea.

To date, ASM has signed 16 MoUs with global science academies such as The Royal Society of Edinburgh, the National Academy of Sciences Belarus and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Following the MoUs, a bilateral symposium was organised with experts sharing insights in food and life sciences, medical sciences and engineering.
