A unique agricultural knowledge-sharing programme was conducted by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to enrich the lives of senior citizens.
The event at Darul Insyirah Senior Citizens Care and Education Centre in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor was titled “Cakna Warga Emas: From Putra to Bonda”.
It aims to empower senior citizens by equipping them with skills and knowledge in hydroponic agriculture and ornamental plant cultivation.
UPM Assoc Prof Dr Ahmad Faizal Abdull Razis said the initiative sought to provide meaningful activities for the elderly while promoting sustainable agriculture.
“We wanted to assist care centre residents by engaging in productive activities that not only fill their leisure time but also contribute to their overall well-being,” he said.
“By sharing our expertise in agriculture, we hoped to inspire them to cultivate their own plants and promote healthy living,” added Ahmad Faizal.
A total of 35 Bachelor of Science in Horticulture students from the Faculty of Agriculture, alongside faculty members and committee members from Tropical Agriculture Institute and Food Security, also participated.
Together with 25 residents from the care centre, they engaged in hands-on activities and demonstrations focused on planting techniques and horticultural practices.
Through direct instruction and guided demonstrations, the senior citizens learned about suitable planting methods for their environment and gained insight into the importance of agriculture and horticulture.
“This programme goes beyond mere agricultural education,” said Ahmad Faizal.
“It serves as a platform for intergenerational bonding and is a great community engagement to be emulated.
“By empowering our senior citizens with practical skills and knowledge, we hope to enhance their quality of life and promote a sense of purpose and fulfillment,” he said.
