SIBU: The new two-storey Sungai Merah Market is expected to be completed next month.

Sarawak Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang said the construction work is over 95% completed, with the remaining portion about 0.56% behind schedule.

"The project will be completed around April. Sibu Municipal Council will set the opening date and the hawkers will start moving to their new stalls," he said on Wednesday (March 27).

Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, said the market will have nine food stalls, 18 dry stalls and five wet stalls.

In addition, there is also an area for seasonal fruits.

Tiang hopes that the construction of the project will continue smoothly so that vendors can open their stalls in the market as soon as possible.

"Overall I am satisfied with the construction progress of the guest market building.

"The construction of the market aims to stimulate the economy in the Sungai Merah area," he said.
