STUDENTS of SM Chong Hwa Kuantan rebooted Chinese New Year festivities with performances in Kuantan, Pahang, for the benefit of their peers.

Principal Chua Leok Hong said the event was an important activity organised by the school’s co-curriculum department, with the aim of giving students of other races the opportunity to learn about Chinese culture.

He said the cultural exchange programme was geared at fostering the spirit of unity among races.

The programme, held from March 11 to 15, saw the involvement of SMK Mat Kilau, SK Mat Kilau, SK Bunut Rendang, SJK (C) Taman Tas, SJK (C) Lembing and SJK (C) Panching as well as Pusat Jagaan Rumah Orang Tua Gabungan Persatuan-Persatuan Tionghua Kuantan.

“I am grateful that the programme has been well-received by students at the participating schools.

"Throughout the programme, the teachers and students at these schools all came together to watch the performances by SM Chong Hwa Kuantan students,” said Chua in a media statement.

Among the performances were the 24 seasons drum, diabolo and lion dances.

“The lion dance performance received great response from the Malay students. They took pictures with the lion.

“This shows their interest and passion for Chinese culture,” said Chua.

The statement also said that the programme allowed SM Chong Hwa Kuantan students the opportunity to perform in public as well as train them to be high calibre, dedicated and responsible activity managers and operators. — By ONG HAN SEAN
