High tide phenomenon hits Klang, causes minor flooding

SEA levels at Port Klang in Selangor reached 5.7m at 6pm on Tuesday (April 9) evening due to a high tide phenomenon, causing minor flooding.

Seawater flowed onto the road outside the South Port passenger terminal on Jalan Syahbandar, reaching ankle depth.

Port Klang Fire and Rescue station chief Razif Mohamad Haris said the tide rose to a maximum of 5.7m as forecast by the National Hydrographic Centre in Port Klang.

A check by StarMetro found that water was above ankle-deep on Jalan Syahbandar and Persiaran Raja Muda Musa outside the Port Klang KTM Komuter station but waters receded quickly.

"Klang had no major flooding," added Razif.

Razif said that bunds at Telok Gong and Pulau Ketam were in good condition and held up against the strong water pressure.

Residents in Bagan Hailam, Port Klang, said water inundated their homes, adding that it occurs regularly.

Several personnel from the Klang Civil Defence Force, Klang Public Works Department, Port Klang Fire Station and Klang Municipal Council's Swift Action Squad (Pantas) were present to monitor the situation at Port Klang jetty.

The National Hydrographic Centre also forecast that sea levels in Port Klang could reach a high of 5.4m at 7.54pm on Thursday (April 11).

In case of emergencies, the public can contact the National Emergency Line at 999 or Klang District Disaster Operation Centre at 03-3371 6700.
