Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and Sibu Rural District Council have been entrusted by Sarawak’s Ministry for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government (MPHLG) to host World Earth Day 2024.

The event themed “Planet vs Plastics” will be launched at Permai Lake Garden today.

“Activities include tree planting, cycling and plogging. The opening ceremony will be officiated by SMC chairman Clarence Ting,” said organising chairman Toh Yong Kiang at a press conference.

He encouraged the public to join in the cycling activity on Permai’s bicycle lane.

Registration is free, and participants are entitled to a mystery gift (limited to 80).

“A waste-to-wealth campaign will take place at the sheltered carpark in Wisma Sanyan, offering cash for used electronic and electrical goods,” said Toh.

He said SMC was collaborating with NGOs, community groups and corporations on future environmental activities.

“They will implement a series of programmes focusing on initiatives such as Go Green Warrior 2024, Love In Action 1.0, educational awareness talks and monthly waste-to-wealth campaigns in residential areas,” he said.
