Prices affording ‘10 basics for under RM100’ help reduce living costs in Sabah’s small coastal community
The “Jualan Rahmah Madani” programme held in Papar town was a boon for the community of Sabah’s west coast.
A Bernama survey found residents thronging the affordable goods initiative at Sabah General Operations Force (PGA) parade ground in Kinarut, a small town about 20km from the state capital of Kota Kinabalu.
Civil servant Syahfiq Mohodin, 31, said the programme was very helpful for the townsfolk, especially those from the B40 group, as it enabled them to get Hari Raya necessities at reasonable prices.
“I bought essential items such as cooking oil, flour and sugar.
“A programme like this can help residents reduce expenses,” he said.
Among available items were 5kg cooking oil sold at RM22 instead of the market price of RM30.90, and sweet soy sauce sold at RM3.75 (RM5.30 market price).
Potatoes were sold at RM2.90 per kg (RM4.10 per kg market price) and 850g of wheat flour at RM2.30 (RM3.25 market price), while a tray of chicken eggs cost RM14 and chicken, RM8 per kg.
Visitors could also get items at cheaper prices through the happy hour slots.
Civil servant Judith @ Rosni Valintinus, 56, said she felt that the Madani initiative should be continued so that the public could buy quality necessities at low prices.
“At first, I had budgeted between RM200 and RM300 to buy the items I needed.
“Instead, at this Rahmah sale, I paid under RM100 for about 10 items, including two trays of chicken eggs, bread, washing soap, sugar, soy sauce, cooking oil and Milo,” she said.
“Jualan Rahmah Madani” is an initiative introduced by the government to help people amid the rising cost of living, especially in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.
