Proposal paper for Durin waterfront project in the works

A waterfront project is being planned for Durin, a sub-district in the central region of Sarawak.

“I have discussed with Sibu Rural District Council chairman councillor Sempurai Petrus Ngelai to prepare the proposal paper,” said Sarawak Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Henry Harry Jinep.

“After that, I will discuss with Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing as this area falls under his jurisdiction.”

Henry said Tiong would then be able to seek funds from Sarawak government to develop the Durin waterfront, a project that the town’s residents had been longing to see take shape.

The Tasik Biru assemblyman said a waterfront was regarded as a priority for riverside cities and towns such as Durin.

He said this in his speech at the opening of Simfoni Batang Rajang, a music showcase that was part of the Durin Cultural Carnival held in the Durin Bazaar riverine area.

Henry said the proposal paper needed to be ready before the next State Legislative Assembly session and would be presented to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

On the suggestion from carnival organising chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew to establish a powerboat competition platform in Durin, Henry pledged to discuss it with Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB).

“I have conferred with the SRB controller on how we can aid in constructing a jetty for boat competitions next year, similar to the pontoon serving as a platform for remote control boats.”

At the function, Henry also witnessed the completion of a roof installation for a jetty along the river in Durin town.

He had approved the project costing RM30,000 during his visit to inspect the jetty last year.
