UNIVERSITY of Technology Sarawak (UTS) is expecting to receive an increase in international student enrolments in the coming years.
This is because the Sarawak government-owned university is actively developing strategies to attract international students and internationalise its faculties.
“According to our 2024-2030 strategic plan, we aim to establish UTS as a globally recognised institution in technical and professional education.
“We anticipate an increase in international students, particularly from Asean countries especially Indonesia and Brunei, China, and Indochina, choosing UTS and Sibu as their preferred higher education destination,” said its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid.Speaking at the UTS appreciation dinner for its collaboration partners, Khairuddin said the university was also looking at recruiting researchers from abroad in the coming years to raise UTS and Sibu’s profile on the global stage.
He called for full support and assistance from their collaboration partners such as the Immigration Department in achieving this goal.
Khairuddin said the dinner was held to extend heartfelt appreciation to all UTS partners, including Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), Sibu Fire and Rescue Department, the police, and media practitioners.
“UTS was relatively unknown a few years ago, but with your support, it is becoming a household name and a source of pride for Sibu and Sarawak.
“We are becoming the university of choice in Sarawak, with the total student population soaring from just over 1,000 to more than 3,200 in the last three years.
“We are confident of reaching a student population of 4,000 by the end of this year,” he added.
Among those present were SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, Sibu Fire and Rescue Department Zone 4 chief Andy Alie, and Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili. — By ANDY CHUA
