THE Bawang Assan constituency needs a younger and more vibrant leader, says Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president said a new leader would help spearhead development.

Dr Sim claimed the area has long lagged behind in terms of infrastructur developments.

Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak deputy premier, said he had in mind a candidate for the constituency.

“The most appropriate person to lead Bawang Assan this time is councillor Kevin Lau.

“He is young, energetic and suitable to lead Bawang Assan in a better direction.

“Bawang Assan is currently far behind and needs a new leader who is loyal to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS),” he said at SUPP’s 65th anniversary celebration and Gawai Dayak gathering organised by the SUPP Bawang Assan branch.

Lau is SUPP Bawang Assan Community Development chief.

In the Sibu Rural District Council, Lau had assumed responsibility as chairman of the standing committee on environment and public health.

He is the youngest son of Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming, who is the paramount Chinese community leader for Sibu district.

Currently, Bawang Assan assemblyman is Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

The former Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president is now with Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

This comes after the dissolution of PSB and the en bloc acceptance of 80,000 of its members into PDP.

Separately, Dr Sim said he would be raising Bawang Assan water supply issues with the relevant ministry.

Also present at the ceremony were SUPP deputy president Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem, vice-president Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, SUPP Bawang Assan chairman Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew and Kevin Lau.
