THE Penang state legislative assembly enjoyed half a tonne of durians to mark the start of the first durian season of the year.

The scent of “fresh off the tree” durians filled the assembly building.

The buffet of durians included Musang King, Black Thorn, Red Prawn, Little Red (Xiao Hong), Muntri (D14) among many other favourites.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and others were seen trying their hands at using a metal contraption to open the prickly fruit.

Penang social development, welfare and non-Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Lim Siew Khim said it was a memorable way to close the state assembly session.

Penang agrotechnology, food security and cooperative development committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said, “We collected them this morning from various farms in Sungai Pinang, Air Itam, Balik Pulau and even Sungai Bakap on the mainland.

“We brought more than 10 types of durians, including Musang King and Black Thorn.

“As the fruit is in season, how could we not bring it over for everyone to taste.

“This time, it will be a long season, so we are looking forward to various programmes in the state, including our durian pesta,” he said.

He added that the durians were provided by him (under his office) and the state Agriculture Department.

Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan also gave out goodie bags containing items like toothpaste and toothbrushes to the media representatives and those present.
