Relocation for all roadside hawkers

Roadside food operators near Perling Mall to be relocated to Dataran Niaga@Jalan Camar in Taman Perling.

ROADSIDE food traders operating within Iskandar Puteri City Council’s (MBIP) jurisdiction will be relocated in phases to designated venues, says mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad.

He said the move would ensure roads in Iskandar Puteri are cleared of traffic obstructions.

“We want to transform the city into a vibrant place under the Greater Johor Baru agenda,” he said when met after the city council fullboard meeting at Menara MBIP in Medini Sentral, Iskandar Puteri.

Mohd Haffiz said they had identified several locations within Iskandar Puteri where the roadside food traders would be relocated to.

“We will first build dedicated venues for them to continue operating from,” said Mohd Haffiz.

He said food traders in Taman Damai Jaya had recently moved to a new location within the neighbourhood.

As for hawkers at the Kenari low-cost flats, Mohd Haffiz said structures at the existing location where they are operating from would be demolished.

“The demolition is to make way for the construction of covered pedestrian walkways.”

Mohd Haffiz said MBIP would erect temporary tents at the low-cost flats so traders could continue operating from there before demolition works start.

He also said hawkers at Taman Perling near the Perling Mall would be relocated to Dataran Niaga@Jalan Camar, adjacent to the Perling wet market.

“We had received complaints of customers double-parking to buy food from the stalls, causing inconvenience to others,” said Mohd Haffiz.

He added lorry drivers who stopped to patronise the stalls would block the view of motorists exiting Jalan Camar to the Perling Highway.

On a related matter, Mohd Haffiz said the Jalan Pekaka hawker centre in Taman Perling would be demolished to make way for a new building.

He said traders there would be relocated to a temporary location next to the Perling wet market.

“We hope to relocate the Jalan Pekaka hawkers this year and to complete the project within two years,” added Mohd Haffiz.
