A WALK clinic held in Melaka attracted a good turnout from students in the state.
A total of 175 junior walkers, aged 15 and below, participated in the event, involving 32 primary and secondary schools.
The programme was organised by Race Walkers’ Association of Malaysia (RWAM) in collaboration with Student Talent Development Unit of Melaka Education Department.
Held at the running track of SMK Seri Kota, it was aimed at nurturing young talent and sparking an interest in the sport of racewalking.
The clinic was conducted by RWAM founder and deputy president Khoo Chong Beng, who has more than two decades of international racewalking experience.
According to Noraziah Kasim, head coach of Melaka Sports School, racewalking is gaining popularity in schools.
“There is a pressing need for a platform to assist teachers with talent scouting and understanding the basic techniques of racewalking, as well as fostering a love for the sport among students,” Noraziah said.
Assistant director of Student Talent Development Unit, Abdul Raoh, said they were excited by the good turnout at the event.
“We hope to see more young athletes from Melaka taking up racewalking.
“It’s a simple and cost-effective sport that requires only a pair of sports shoes, making it accessible to everyone,” he said.
The clinic was sponsored by Nestle Malaysia.
All participants were provided with T-shirts and Milo drinks to ensure that they stayed energised and motivated throughout the programme.
RWAM will also be organising the Melaka Junior Walking Championship, which will be held in three circuits.
