Apartment’s rat infestation blamed on clogged drains

Rats seen scurrying away at the back lanes of Jalan Khoo Teik Ee, Kuala Lumpur.

RESIDENTS in the vicinity of Imbi Apartment in Kuala Lumpur are living in fear of disease and other health concerns due to rat-infested back lanes.

They blamed the infestation on drains clogged with food waste and stagnant water.

Apartment resident Lim Choon Yean said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) should check on the entire drainage system in the area as water does not seem to channel out.

“Water just pools in the drains which overflow whenever there is a downpour.

“I suspect part of the drain that channels the water out must be clogged or blocked.”

Lim said he had lodged complaints with DBKL several times but the situation had not improved.

“Sometimes there would be a foul stench from the drain.

“Despite Alam Flora Sdn Bhd’s effort to clear the food waste, the drains will get clogged after one or two days,” he said.

“It has attracted rats,” he added.

During a visit by StarMetro, rats were seen in the back lanes of Jalan Khoo Teik Ee behind the commercial shoplots.

Some parts of the drains were clogged with food waste and rubbish.

There were also several missing drain covers at different locations around the apartment.

Another resident who wanted to be known as Chan, said the missing drain covers pose a safety risk to pedestrians.

“Someone could fall into the drain.

“Some of the drain kerbs are also damaged,” he said.

DBKL had not responded at press time.
