RAJA Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah earned praise from both vendors and patrons here for using a tiffin carrier when buying popiah at a Shah Alam pasar malam.

During his visit to the Section 7 night market in Shah Alam on Wednesday evening, Tengku Amir was seen asking the trader to fill his tiffin carrier with the snack.

Arriving on a red Vespa accompanied by a 15-scooter convoy, he mixed and mingled with the crowd as part of Gagasan Rumpun Selangor’s Unity programme, an initiative launched earlier this year to promote unity within the state.

Office workers rushing through the market praised Tengku Amir for his attempt to reduce single-use packaging and plastic bags, highlighting the positive environmental impact.

Popiah seller Muhammad Khairullah recognised Tengku Amir’s efforts as a significant step towards encouraging the public to use their containers and contribute to the fight against climate change.

Tengku Amir's choice inspired one shopper to forgo a plastic bag, choosing instead to carry away their popiah wrapped in paper.

Satay vendor Asmadi Hassan said he was excited about the royal visit and added that he was very happy when Tengku Amir purchased satay from his stall.

Tengku Amir was accompanied by Selangor Rural Development, Unity and Consumers Committee Chairman Datuk Rizam Ismail; Selangor Exco for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He was also accompanied by Selangor Palace representative Datuk Emran Kadir; Shah Alam City Council’s (MBSA) Mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim; MBSA Deputy Mayor Madiyan Baweh; and members of Gagasan Rumpun Selangor.

The Section 7 Pasar Malam has 159 stalls and has been a fixture since 2016.

During his hour-long stay, Tengku Amir warmly greeted the public, who eagerly took the chance to snap selfies with the visiting royalty.
