Arulmigu Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Queen Street, which was built in 1833, now has a new multi-purpose hall to cater for the Indian community’s needs in the heart of George Town, Penang.

Those seeking a venue for private functions such as birthdays, engagement ceremonies, meetings and other events, can consider renting the hall at a rate of between RM150 and RM300.

The new 111.4sq m hall adjacent to the temple is solely funded by R. Arasu, who took over as temple chairman in October 2023.

“Previously, I was just a temple volunteer and used to observe the lack of space for people to hold events, gatherings, and even for serving food to guests after any function at the main temple.

“When I took over as chairman, this was the first project I set out to do to fulfil the needs of the Indian community in this area.

“Construction started in November 2023 and involved flooring, air-conditioning, walls, paint job, facade, wiring and ceiling works, all of which took more than two months to complete,” he said.

So far, more than 10 events have been held at the fully air-conditioned hall named as the Mahamariamman Illam (Mahamariamman Hall).

The RM120,000 hall with a seating capacity of 120 was originally the site of the temple store.

The hall also has facilities for the disabled.

Arasu said a new teakwood 7m-high chariot, which cost RM250,000, would arrive from India in September.

Present at the opening of the hall were Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, Penang housing and environment committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo, Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, Senator Dr A. Lingeshwaran and Penang island mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.

In his speech, temple deputy chairman R. Saravanan requested Penang Island City Council to consider renaming the road in front of the temple to Lebuh Sri Maha Mariamman as the temple is one of the state’s oldest temples.

In her speech, Lim, who is also Deputy Finance Minister, pledged a RM10,000 fund for the temple upkeep.

At the event, students from needy families who excelled in their studies were presented with education funds.
