Council seizes old, unsafe tableware from Sibu eateries

Some of the items confiscated from eateries in Sibu.

Three eatery operators in Sibu, Sarawak had their old tableware confiscated during an inspection.

Speaking at a media conference, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting said the seizures were made during an inspection on eight food premises at Farley Commercial Centre and along Jalan Salim.

“As a result, three premises that still used old bowls and glasses have had these confiscated.”

He also revealed that compounds were issued to an additional three premises.

Two were found to have no operating permit while one business was operating on an expired licence.

“Our enforcers also seized plastic drinking straws from four premises and issued cleanliness notices to instal grease traps.

“All operators were advised to always keep their premises, including the toilets, clean.”

Ting urged food and beverage operators to immediately change serving plates, bowls, cups and other utensils that had been used for a long time.

He stressed that the council took seriously the practice of using old tableware as this was considered unhealthy.

Ting said SMC would only confiscate old tableware for now, but did not rule out the possibility of further action being taken to safeguard customers’ health and safety.

“We are not only confiscating items but there is action awaiting those who are still stubborn.

“It seems that there are still some businessmen who are not aware of what SMC announced earlier.”

In May, Ting had announced action against eateries that still used old plastic and melamine crockery, and plastic straws.
