INDIA’S Rahil Gangjee secured a deserved win at the PKNS Selangor Masters 2024.
Gangjee’s impressive performance over the four-day tournament at Seri Selangor Golf Club in Petaling Jaya saw him finish with an 8-under-par 272 total, earning him US$30,625 (RM144,335).
Despite six bogeys in his final round, his lead proved unassailable.
Gangjee started the last day with a five-shot lead, which diminished as he struggled early on, but he managed to maintain his composure to secure victory.
Australian Deyen Lawson finished in second place, one shot behind Gangjee, with Thailand’s Runchanapong Youprayong and rising young star Marcus Lim tied for third.
Lim, who was best among the Malaysian participants, tallied a six-under-par 274 over four rounds and received a prize of RM10,000 for being the top Malaysian in the competition.
“Although I had hoped for a better start today, I had bogeys for the first two holes, but aside from that, everything went smoothly,” said Lim.
“This is my first professional tournament, so I hope I can continue to carry on the momentum.”
Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who graced the closing ceremony, presented the trophies and prizes.
Another Malaysian, Muhammad Danial Muhammad Nazari, 16, was awarded the Best Amateur for being the only amateur player who made the cut to play throughout the tournament and he received the award from the Selangor crown prince during the closing ceremony.
A total of 144 participants vied for US$175,000 (RM824,726) in prize money.
The event also featured a contribution to charity with Tengku Amir Shah receiving a mock cheque of RM300,000 on behalf of Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor from Sime Darby Property, which was presented by its group managing director Datuk Azmir Merican.
The PKNS Selangor Masters followed the Junior International Selangor Golf Championship, which was held earlier this month and featured 123 junior golfers.
Earlier, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari highlighted how these events promoted new talent and supported professional golfers, particularly Malaysians.
