July fun run funds tiger conservation

IN celebration of Global Tiger Day 2024, WWF-Malaysia and Maybank are organising “Run for Tigers”, a 3.5km event aimed at raising awareness and funds for the conservation of the critically endangered Malayan tiger.

The July 21 event will take place at Kepong Metropolitan Park, Kuala Lumpur, from 6.30am to 9.30am.

Runners can also showcase their creativity in the “Run with Your Costume On” contest for a chance to win a cash prize of RM250.

With fewer than 150 Malayan tigers left in the wild, this event was crucial not only to raise awareness but to keep Malaysia’s national icon at the forefront of public consciousness, said WWF-Malaysia chief executive officer and executive director Sophia Lim in a press statement.

“Tiger conservation is not just about saving one species.

“It’s about maintaining the rich biodiversity of our forests and ensuring the health of our ecosystems.

“The survival of the Malayan tiger reflects the well-being of our natural environment,” she said.

This year, WWF-Malaysia and Maybank entered the third phase of a partnership with a focus on protecting tigers and monitoring their populations, increasing prey availability, empowering local communities and supporting effective Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CATS) management.

“The collaborative efforts of Maybank and WWF-Malaysia have led to the deployment of over 100 rangers across more than 70,000km of dense forest, providing essential on-the-ground protection for these endangered big cats,” said Maybank Foundation chief executive officer and Maybank Group Corporate Affairs head Izlyn Ramli.

Since 2016, WWF-Malaysia and Maybank have collaborated through the “Strengthening Tiger Conservation in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex” programme.

In 2023, Royal Belum State Park became the first site in Malaysia and South-East Asia to receive CATS accreditation.

To support their work, RM10 from each registration fee will be channelled to WWF-Malaysia’s tiger conservation programme.
