Jobless woman gets partial refund for unused hair removal sessions

AN UNEMPLOYED woman who was dissatisfied with the hair removal services of a skin clinic in Johor Baru had her claim for a full refund rejected.

Lim Hue Chin, however, won an order for a partial refund from the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal for the hair removal sessions she had not yet used.

Lim had on Oct 30, 2023 paid RM28 for laser treatment to remove hair on her arms at a salon in Johor Baru.

“An assistant offered me a hair removal package for RM2,000,’’ she said when met outside the tribunal in Johor Baru.

The 22-year-old claimant paid RM2,000 for 20 sessions to the clinic on the same day.

On Dec 10, she paid an additional RM3,000 for another package of 30 hair removal sessions, this time for her legs.

The claimant went for 12 arm hair removal sessions and seven for her leg, with each session lasting about 15 minutes.

Lim also took up the offer to have her facial hair removed and paid RM1,314 for a package on Feb 17, 2024, but did not attend any sessions.

In total, the claimant paid RM6,314 for the three packages.

“The clinic promised the hair removal on my arms and legs would be permanent but the hair regrew after the sessions,” she said.

Upon checking online, Lim discovered that the company had received unfavourable reviews and testimonies from other clients.

She then decided to file a case at the tribunal and asked the respondent to refund RM6,314.

However, tribunal president Lee Chee Thim rejected the amount claimed as Lim had attended 17 out of 50 sessions.

He ordered the respondent, who did not attend the hearing, to refund RM4,098.30 to the claimant within two weeks.
