Encouraging critical thinking through books

The BSIB-Finco book collection drive will help young minds in the 13 beneficiary schools.

Nearly 1,600 books have been collected by Berjaya Sompo Insurance Bhd (BSIB) in partnership with the Financial Industry Collective Outreach (Finco).

The book collection drive was an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiative.

The campaign encouraged BSIB’s stakeholders to contribute towards building a sustainable future.

Each state with a BSIB presence had a beneficiary while Klang Valley saw two more schools on its recipient list.

The impact of this drive reached around 7,800 students.

Finco is a non-profit organisation set up in 2017 with the support of Bank Negara Malaysia and has been instrumental in empowering disadvantaged children and youth across the country via education.

BSIB chief executive officer Tan Sek Kee thanked staff, agents, partners and the public for their support.

“Our collaboration with Finco reflects our dedication to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people, particularly those from underserved communities.

“By promoting access to education and embracing sustainability, we aim to build a brighter and more inclusive future for all,” said Tan.

Finco chief executive officer Clare Walker spoke about how an increased access to books of various genres and reading levels would encourage students to read for pleasure.

“Instilling a love for reading at a young age allows students to build on their foundational English language skills,” she said.

“This also provides opportunities to develop reading skills such as the ability to analyse, question and understand information critically, which can help them make informed decisions later in life,” she added.
