AN interesting new event space which can be turned into a bespoke cocktail bar has emerged in Kuala Lumpur’s heritage enclave of Jalan Yap Ah Shak.
The meticulously restored six-storey building – Yap Ah Shak House – combines the allure of historical architecture with contemporary design.
Patrons will soon be able to move from one sophisticated food and beverage outlets to another, while enjoying what each has to offer all under one roof.
The Drawing Room at Yap Ah Shak House is a place for those seeking a distinctive venue to host their next gathering.
It is the first of five new spaces opening soon to complement its existing work and meeting spaces on the first and second floors.
The heritage Italian kitchen of Osteria Gamberoni will be on the ground floor and Terrazza will be on the rooftop.
The bespoke service goes beyond just a venue.
The Drawing Room has a dedicated team that curates every detail, from crafting personalised menus featuring inventive culinary creations to painstakingly styling the space to reflect the customer’s vision, whatever that may be.
Be it an intimate cocktail reception or a vibrant social gathering, The Drawing Room is like an elegant pop-up of sorts.
As part of the Jazz at Yap Ah Shak House 2024 programme, we were treated to a preview at the opening of The Drawing Room which featured well-known vocalist Clair Rozells and the WLi Cheah Quartet for two nights of live jazz and groove-infused music.
It also included a free flow of beverages and sumptuous canapes prepared fresh by French chef Antoine Commare from Brasserie Alma on the fourth floor of Yap Ah Shak House that will open in a few months.
“This event was meant to be upstairs at Brasserie Alma,” explained Anton Syazi Ahmad Sebi, the man behind Yap Ah Shak House.
He added that the fourth floor used to be an event space that was now being refashioned into the brasserie with a jazz club built inside.
“The opening of The Drawing Room will introduce what people can expect on the fourth floor,” he said.
Reza Salleh, vocalist of the six-man swing jazz band The Frankie Sixes, is the director of music and performing arts programming at Yap Ah Shak House.
He said their main intention was to set up a mini ecosystem comprising arts, music as well as food and beverage at Yap Ah Shak House.
“It will be primarily jazz or jazz-adjacent genres, but we will explore some indie offerings too as part of our identity,” said Reza.
