JOHOR government has channelled more than RM1mil to 22 associations to spur the growth of local sports and make Johor a sporting powerhouse.
State youth, sports, entrepreneur development and cooperatives committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said he recently attended a Johor Sports Association town hall session where feedback and views were collected during a question-and-answer session.
“After the question-and-answer session, we also presented sports association with grants for 2024.
“Last year, only 16 sport associations qualified for the grants, but this year, the number has jumped to 22.
“One association received a RM100,000 grant, another four received RM70,000 each while the remaining 17 received RM50,000 each,” he disclosed.
Mohd Hairi said the allocation amounted to RM1.2mil.
He said starting this year, the weighting of grades equated to 70% for athlete achievements and 30% association governance.
He also said that among the assessment elements taken into account were the number of affiliate members of the respective associations besides their annual calendar.
“We also looked into their athlete participation at international, national and state events as well as their organising of international, national and state events,” he added.
Mohd Hairi said Johor Sports Association also provided its full and complete information, which was a set of documents or reports containing information about the association.
He added that Johor-based sports associations must also have representation at national level in positions such as president, secretary or technical head.
Johor Football Association is the only association to receive a RM100,000 grant for a third year in a row.
