KLANG Royal City Council (MBDK) is advising people to adopt a balanced diet and lessen consumption of sugary foods and drinks.

Its deputy mayor Mohd Zary Affendi Mohd Arif said a balanced diet means having regular meals and choosing to eat food in right quantities.

“We do not need to cut all sweet or salty foods out of our diet.

“However, we need a balanced diet containing vegetables and fruits that provide all the basic nutrients and fibre for us to be healthy,” he said in his speech at the city council’s Health Day at Dewan Hamzah, Klang.

Mohd Zary said people must be aware that having too much sugar or salt in their diet might affect them negatively.

“Eating right benefits both our physical and mental health.

“It gives more energy throughout the day and helps us maintain a healthy weight.

“It also reduces risk of heart problems and type 2 diabetes,” he said to MBDK staff who had gathered for free health checks being carried out as part of the initiative.

He added that the Klang Health Office should consider a campaign to raise awareness on the need to reduce the consumption of sugar in every age group.

“As a city, we want to see people adopt a healthier lifestyle that includes exercise,” he said.

MBDK Health Department director Azmi Muji said the high amount of sugar found in certain foods could negatively affect a person’s health.

“Our Health Day initiative aims to encourage people to lessen their sugar intake and make simple lifestyle changes,” he said.

“These steps can make a big difference, whether at home, or out and about,” added Azmi.

Earlier, MBDK employees joined in the blood donation drive, basic health checks, dental and eye check-ups, and health talks.
