Association compiles life stories of old folks into fundraising book

Mohiadin says there are 22 sad, real life stories in the book Terkulai Di Senja Hari.

A collection of short stories based on the life experiences of residents of Pusat Jagaan Mahmudah Malaysia and Pusat Jagaan Nur Hasanah has been compiled into a book.

Persatuan Kebajikan Mahmudah Malaysia founder, Mohiadin Bahado, 65, said the association published the 134-page book titled Terkulai Di Senja Hari back in 2021.

Both homes are under Mohiadin’s care.

“There are 22 sad, real life stories that I have put together over the course of my 18 years working in the care industry,” he said.

“The stories are in narrative form for easy reading.

“They relate to the seniors’ backgrounds, causes leading to their neglect and current factors affecting societal behaviour in caring for old folk.”

For example, the sixth story titled Terpaksa sisih emak kerana isteri is about a son who reluctantly admits his mum to a care centre because his wife threatened to leave him if he did not do so.

“Publishing the book is our way of raising awareness among the public about the harsh realities that elderly folk face,” said Mohiadin.

Over 1,000 copies have been sold with profits going towards the homes’ development fund.

“When people buy the book, they are simultaneously educating themselves and donating to us.

“Their donation contributes to the old folks having a better life,” he said.

The book, co-written by Pusat Jagaan Nur Hasanah secretary Aidah Jaamat, can be purchased at the homes for RM50.
