Projects in Sibu underway, with most on schedule

DESPITE some projects being behind schedule, there are no “sick projects” in Sibu division.

According to Sarawak Infrastructure and Port Development Deputy Minister Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, the division which covered Sibu, Mukah and Selangau had projects worth RM1.92bil.

Of these, RM317.4mil worth of projects were currently being implemented and the rest had been approved but were awaiting implementation, he said.

So far, none of the projects had been categorised as “sick projects”, he assured.

“Most of them are on schedule. Although some are behind schedule, this can be overcome,” Aidel said after attending a briefing on the progress of the projects.

The briefing was conducted by Public Works Department (JKR) Sibu chief Chieng Siong Ming.

On the proposed Jalan Teku Pasai-Siong connecting to Kemuyang, Aidel said it would be implemented under the People’s Projects.

“I visited the site. The road will be from UTS (University of Technology Sarawak) roundabout to Pasai-Siong.

“It will be a dual carriageway to Kemuyang. Later the road from Taman Desa Kemuyang to Jalan Sibu-Bintulu will be upgraded to a higher level for a smoother drive,” said Aidel.

He said the project was challenging as it involved utility, electricity and telecommunication cables.

The construction of the 7.6km Jalan Kong Yit Khim to Sibu airport would be completed by December, he said.

“JKR needs to monitor the project so that it can be completed before Christmas,” he added.

Among those present at the briefing were Nangka assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee and Bawang Assan assemblymen Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh. ― By ANDY CHUA
