Turning beauty into a business

THE name Jcqlyne Chin might be familiar with those in the beauty pageant world.

Her journey into the beauty contest world started at 18 upon securing third runner-up in the Miss Malaysia Universe competition in 2000, and winning Miss Malaysia Tourism International in 2002.

She later capitalised on her connections in the industry to launch a successful beauty brand.

But did you know that Chin has held a white-collar job, owns a bakery and is a Chinese Metaphysics consultant?

Recounting the many twists and turns of her life to StarMetro, Chin, 42, said her life behind the clicks of cameras and sequinned gowns started out in a fairly typical manner.

But instead of the traditional post-university corporate path, Chin opted to take to the skies instead.

At the age of 26, she joined Cathay Pacific as a stewardess.

“I was only a stewardess for three years and after that, I decided to take a shot at the corporate world,” said Chin.

However, she found the traditional 9-to-5 role in business development at a bank unappealing.

She said the job left her feeling deprived and tired.

“I couldn’t stand staring at the computer screen. I needed to be with people, out there, communicating.”

Wanting an outlet from her office work, Chin studied Chinese Metaphysics in her downtime.

Honing on people’s energy and spirit, Chinese Metaphysics seemed right up her alley.

Having achieved an Advanced Mastery Certification in Feng Shui and Chinese Metaphysics, she has been doing consultations on request since 2011.

In 2015, Chin resigned from the bank after just a year, which coincidentally also marked the end of her pageant career.

She then embarked on the next chapter of her life and opened a bakery in 2017.

“It was called Jcqlyne Chin Ventures, selling cakes, chocolate and macarons,” she said, adding that as of this year, the bakery only operates based on orders.

Chin entered the limelight, and the beauty world, again in 2021 after her father started having skin problems.

“My father was suffering from chronic skin disease. I couldn’t bear to see him suffer.

“A doctor approached me and advised me to get into the beauty industry seeing as I had previous connections from my pageant days,” she said.

Chin started DeAge Titanium Beauty and launched her first product in 2022.

The brand now has a diverse range of healthcare items, cosmetics, skincare essentials and supplements.

She said prior to her experience with her father’s skin condition, she would go swimming, jogging and snorkelling under the sun without using skincare.

But her views on beauty has evolved.

“I now dive deep into what is really important, and staying healthy at any age for women.

“Health and beauty go hand in hand.”

Chin is also an avid traveller.

“The only time my mind is free is when I travel and that is when I get new ideas.”

Chin said her people-person personality was one of the reasons why her beauty brand was the perfect match for her.

“Doing business on the go anywhere in the world gives me freedom, and the beauty business can be done everywhere,” she added.
