Sibu pipes to be replaced, folk told to store water

Ting informed the council board that water pipes aged over 15 years would be replaced.

All old water pipes in Sibu will be replaced at a cost of RM170mil as part of Sarawak’s RM1.08bil allocation statewide.

Addressing the Sibu Municipal Council full board meeting, chairman Clarence Ting said old pipes were defined as those 15 years or older.

He advised the public to store water or instal water storage tanks to cope with water supply interruptions that were expected to occur during the installation of new pipes.

It has, however, not been announced when the replacement of pipes would commence.

Ting said a new water treatment plant costing RM238mil would only be in operation at the end of 2026.

“The current Salim water treatment plant water production capacity is 150 million litres daily (MLD).

“The new water treatment plant will double the capacity to 300MLD.

“There are going to be many water issues in the council area.

“The public should have their own water tank as demand for water will be very high,” he added.

The daily capacity of the nearby Bukit Lima plant is 45MLD. — By ANDY CHUA
