THE Federal Government has allocated more than RM400,000 to repair a landslide spot near a primary school along Sungai Tiram in Ulu Tiram, Johor.

Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah Wee Tse said work to repair the site, located behind SJK (C) Tiram’s canteen, began in June and was expected to be completed by October this year.

“The landslide happened during the rainy season in January this year.

“Thankfully, no one was hurt as the incident happened at night when no one was at school.

“Although there were no injuries, it has definitely raised concerns among residents in this area, especially since it involves the safety of schoolchildren.

“We hope that the project will ensure that such an incident does not happen again in the future,” he told reporters after visiting the project site.

He added that a similar incident happened in the area over a decade ago.

Puah said the school area was among 13 points along the two major rivers in Tebrau, namely Sungai Tiram and Sungai Tebrau, which were in need of upgrades.

“To repair this site alone, the Federal Government has allocated RM432,000 through the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry.

“The cost to upgrade all of the points identified has been estimated to be close to RM5mil,” he said, adding that he was grateful for the allocation.

Also expressing his appreciation was SJK (C) Tiram Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) chairman Ng Yew Lam, who said he was grateful to the Federal Government for its prompt response.

“We are also thankful to the MP and the Johor Drainage and Irrigation Department for their assistance in securing the funds to repair the structure that was damaged by the landslide.

“This is a very important matter for us as it is about the lives and safety of our children.

“We are worried that another landslide may occur if we do not act quickly, especially since this is a flood-prone area,” he said.
