Senator: Let special children learn self-reliance to aid in their growth

Parents of children with disabilities need to be more open-minded in ensuring that they can be self-reliant.

Senator Isaiah Jacob said this approach was essential for the children’s future ability to adapt and manage themselves, especially in the absence of parents and other family members.

“I agree that some parents are hesitant to allow their disabled children to live independently.

“Unlike abroad, where children with disabilities receive training, many parents in Malaysia are overly-protective, fearing for their children’s safety and health if they venture out.

“While I understand their love and concern, there must be a limit,” he told Bernama in Seremban, Negri Sembilan.

Speaking after visiting Senawang Special Education Activity House (RAPKS) managed by the Negri Sembilan Organisation of Teachers, Parents, and Children with Special Needs in Seremban, he said, “When these children attend community-based rehabilitation programmes, they can do various tasks like washing dishes and cleaning themselves.

“However, when they return home, they are not allowed to do these tasks and this hinders their development.

“Parents need to be aware of this,” said Isaiah.

He added that he would propose in the Dewan Negara that education about disabilities, including the use of sign language, be incorporated at the secondary school level to ensure societal exposure to these issues.
