Security at Sibu Foochow Park will be improved with the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras next year.
Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Datuk Michael Tiang said he had agreed to the Sibu Foochow Association’s (SFA) request for CCTVs at the park.
“I have promised to instal the CCTV cameras in 2025.
“The association will be responsible for maintaining the system,” said the Pelawan assemblyman at a minor rural project grant handover at SFA’s premises.
Tiang shared that he allocated RM10,000 to SFA this year, and promised to allocate another RM50,000 to the association in 2025.
Located along Jalan Gambir, the park is a joint project between SFA and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).
It was built in 2022 at a cost of RM800,000.
So far, no accidents nor crimes have been reported at the park.
Designed to reflect the history of Sibu’s 10 Foochow clans, the park has become a landmark and is regarded as a gateway to Sarawak’s central region.
The entrance to the park is modelled after the famed Sanfang Qixiang street in Fuzhou, China.
A total of 56 trees have been planted in the 0.404ha park, which is surrounded by residential neighbourhoods.
Maintained by SMC, the park has three Chinese pavilions, two jogging tracks, a restroom and stage. — By ANDY CHUA
