St Nicholas Convent class of ‘85 celebrates priceless friendships

Fifteen of the 1985 graduating batch reliving their schooldays during the reunion.

THE ‘80s were a different era. It was a time before the Internet, smartphones and traffic jams.

That was also the decade when music from Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper, Bonnie Tyler and Duran Duran ruled.

These memories hold strong among the Class of ‘85, former students of the St Nicholas Convent in Alor Setar, Kedah.

Fifteen of them came from as far as Australia to reunite in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.

Educator Serena Foo, who was the mastermind behind the reunion, said their friendship was still going strong.

“No secrets, no pretence. We are comfortable being ourselves and sharing our life stories. What a blessing!” she shared.

Some of the women had not seen each other for almost 40 years after completing Form Five.

Bookkeeper and yoga teacher Vickie Loo was grateful for social media which enabled her to stay in touch with her classmates, even though she lives in Melbourne where she moved to 30 years ago.

“It was wonderful to reconnect in person and hear everyone’s life journeys since we went our separate ways,” she said.

“I will always cherish the memories we had together.”

Macrame artist and corporate trainer Sinthana Velayutham shared: “It’s like being back in the good old days when we were in our pinafores, laughing, giggling and chatting nonstop.”

Manmeet Kaur, a project manager based in Sydney said: “It feels like being back at school and young again. There’s so much to catch up on!”

Homemaker Zuraida Musa expressed how she felt blessed to have such good friends all through her primary and secondary years at St Nicholas Convent.

“Although we grew up and parted ways, everyone still stays close to my heart. The friendship is priceless.”

Some of the women, who were unable to make it for the reunion, expressed joy and surprise when they saw the pictures that were shared.

“It’s scary, no one looks a day older than when I last saw them,” said Sharon Tan, who resides in Penang.

“This reunion was a rare opportunity to reconnect with everyone.

“I’m definitely not missing the next gathering,” said Shirley Seah.
