NEWLY appointed village development and security committee (JPKK) chiefs aspire to improve their communities.
Kampung Jenderam Hulu JPKK chairman Muslimin Manap, who was re-appointed for the fourth term, has vowed to increase villagers’ incomes through economic programmes.
“Some of the economic activities on my list are fish and chicken farming as well as supporting small and medium-sized stalls.
“Combined with government efforts such as “Program Sejahtera Komuniti Madani” (Sejati Madani), I hope to increase the overall income level in my village,” he said during a ceremony at a hotel in Shah Alam, Selangor, to present appointment letters to JPKK chairmen.
Sejati Madani is a RM1bil initiative by the Federal Government to promote community-level economic activities in five main fields, namely agriculture and food, stitching and handicraft, herbs and health, tourism and hospitality as well as green activities and recycling.
Kampung Parit 5/6 Gambut JPKK chairman Maslina Husein is eager to listen to villagers’ voices.
“Being in this position provides me the platform to interact with villagers, especially women, who may lack awareness and knowledge on improving their lives.
“It is important for women to stand up for themselves,” said Maslina, who is one of 23 women appointed as JPKK leaders.
The ceremony, which was launched by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, saw 373 JPKK chairmen being sworn in.
They will serve their respective villages until Dec 31 next year.
Also present were Selangor rural development, unity and consumers committee chairman Datuk Rizam Ismail, and state public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin.
Rizam said JPKK could create an impact on the community by organising various integrated activities.
“JPKK also play a big role in connecting the state government’s initiatives to villages.
“As community leaders, you serve as the catalyst to move the state government forward through meaningful collaborations,” he said.
Rizam added that his office would soon offer courses to train JPKK leaders in village management.
“The scope of the courses will include leadership and management as well as organisational skills and protocols.
“We will also promote healthy competition among villages through various initiatives such as JPKK appreciation dinner, village head icon and the best village award,” he said.
