NUMed’s students stand to benefit from the university’s emphasis on lab experiences.
WITH laboratories playing an instrumental role in healthcare, lab experience is vital in training the sector’s workers.
Exposure to labs provides students with practical and critical thinking skills as well as technological proficiency.
Labs are also where theories are tested, enabling students to apply clinical concepts in real-world scenarios.
Recognising this, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) offers an array of lab experiences to provide students with a deep understanding of biomedical sciences.
Based in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, the campus’ anatomy and wet teaching labs have been equipped and maintained by a team committed to creating engaging learning spaces.
Lab work helps students develop pipetting, microscopy and data analysis skills vital for research and clinical practice.
According to NUMed’s Assoc Prof and Biomedical Sciences assistant dean Dr Roshan Mascarenhas, biomedical scientists need a blend of theoretical and practical knowledge plus soft skills.
“Lab work often emphasises teamwork while enhancing students’ communication and problem-solving skills, preparing them for research collaborations,” he said.
“Our students have access to advanced labs, technology and resources that allow them to engage in hands-on learning, conduct experiments and gain proficiency in using modern tools,” he added.
NUMed students are also exposed to research partnerships with leading UK healthcare institutions.
NUMed’s Assoc Prof and Biomedical Sciences dean Dr Madihah Rushaidhi shared that the UK campus is home to world-class research facilities and resources.
“Practical skills are developed in well-equipped laboratories,” she said.
“Our students who head to the UK campus for a study stint are able to take advantage of these advanced facilities to enhance their overall learning experience and research opportunities,” she added.
NUMed offers a Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences pre-undergraduate programme.
It also has two undergraduate programmes, namely Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences.
