A FISHING park in Bagan Hailam, off Jalan Pelabuhan Klang Utara in Port Klang, has been illegally tapping treated water for its workers and restaurant to use for approximately a year.
This was discovered when the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), based on an initial investigation, carried out a joint raid with Air Selangor.
The fishing park, famous for its red snapper and sea bass, was found to have made an illegal connection to an Air Selangor standpipe. This resulted in an estimated RM110,000 in revenue loss for the water company over one year.
SPAN corporate communications and customer affairs unit director Mohd Fazil Ismail said that the fishing park operator is believed to have been tapping treated water from the standpipe since July last year.
“Several industries in the immediate area had complained to Air Selangor about low water pressure. Based on Air Selangor’s report, SPAN carried out checks and found an illegal connection was made,” he said.
Fazil said a 25mm poly pipe was used to divert treated water from the standpipe, without a meter, some 70m to utility rooms and kitchens in the fishing park.
He said an estimated 37,000 cubic meters of water was diverted over the year.
SPAN has issued a compound, and the owner will be called in to assist in further investigations.
“SPAN tested the chlorine content to confirm that it was treated water,” he said, adding that the case would be investigated under Section 123 (1) of the Water Services Industry Act 2006 (Act 655).
Fazil hoped that such enforcement exercise would deter people from stealing treated water.
“We encourage consumers to report water theft to SPAN at 013 388 5000 or email aduan@span.gov.my,” he said.
