Redevelopment of Kampung Sungai Baru can revitalise Kampung Baru, says Zaliha

THE REDEVELOPMENT of Kampung Sungai Baru will spur the development of Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa (pic).

"We know that Kampung Baru is somewhat behind in development.

"So, we want the redevelopment of Kampung Sungai Baru to be a catalyst to the development of Kampung Baru as well as Kuala Lumpur," she told a press conference held at the launch of an elevated intersection along Jalan Sultan Iskandar Highway (Mahameru highway).

Zaliha also refuted claims that the government is changing the narrative of the land acquisition of Kampung Sungai Baru.

"The government will facilitate the redevelopment.

"When I was appointed as minister, I had to see this issue being addressed.

"The majority had agreed to the redevelopment and this is what is happening on the ground.

"We went on with the project based on the majority," she said.

She was responding to a reporter's question that certain parties are claiming the government is changing the narrative of the redevelopment of Kampung Sungai Baru.

The redevelopment plan, which commenced in 2016, includes building a mixed-development high-rise.

Since then, the majority of the flats' residents had reportedly agreed to the redevelopment while the majority of the terrace homeowners disagreed.

This disagreement stalled the redevelopment, prompting the developer to use the Land Acquisition Act 1960 to acquire the land.

On Dec 27, 2022, StarMetro reported that the developer had already paid between RM800,000 and RM3mil in compensation to the terrace homeowners.

Last year, the Federal Territory Land and Mines Office (PTGWP) issued an order to vacate by Oct 5, failing which legal action would be taken.

Meanwhile, Zaliha also took note of a reporter's questions about the poor condition of Kompleks Raja Bot and said she would visit the market soon.
