AT FIRST sight, the complex with traditional grey roof tiles off Jalan Langat in Klang looks like any other structure with Chinese architecture.
The soon-to-be-completed building is in fact Masjid Jamek Cina Muslim Klang.
Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association (Macma) Selangor branch adviser Sharin Low Abdullah said the mosque was a first in Selangor.
“It is a head turner. This mosque has elaborate Chinese architectural features inspired by the Great Mosque of Xi’an in China,” he said, adding that Xi’an was the capital of Shaanxi province.
He said the new building with its ridged curved roofs and single three-tier pagoda along Jalan Langat, that is also known as Klang-Banting highway, had intrigued people.
“Most find it hard to believe that this cluster of buildings is a mosque.”
Sharin said the mosque was scheduled to open to the public by the end of August.
“Our mosque will promote Muslim-friendly tourism.
“We plan to work with Tourism Selangor to develop Masjid Jamek Cina Muslim Klang into an iconic tourist spot,” he said.
“We want to jointly draw strategies with Tourism Selangor to create travel experiences with visits to the mosque and entice tourists to stay longer.”
Sharin added that there was a need to promote the product to travellers as mosques were holiday destinations for Muslims.
“In Kuala Lumpur, international tourists will not miss visiting Masjid Negara.
“We could organise tours to other mosques as both Muslims and non-Muslim tourists appreciate unique architecture in places of worship.”
Sharin added that the mosque would have a cultural centre, souvenir shop and cafe. — By EDWARD RAJENDRA
