OVER 50 environmental crises were prevented in Selangor this year due to Lembaga Urus Air Selangor's (LUAS) round-the-clock monitoring, says state health and environment exco chief Jamaliah Jamaludin.
"LUAS has been monitoring almost 24 hours a day this year and their extensive monitoring has been quite successful in addressing incidents caused by irresponsible parties that have led to pollution," she said.
Two individuals were detained by the Environment Department for polluting a river on July 26.
The pollution led to the shutdown of four water treatment plants in Selangor, causing an unscheduled water supply cut affecting thousands of households.
She said early investigations revealed that there was a leak from the factory and investigations were still underway.
"A post-mortem will then be carried out to determine what actions can be taken if a similar incident occurs in the future," she said during the state's small environmental grant presentation for 2024 in Shah Alam on Tuesday (July 30).
She also said a meeting would be held this week to review the follow-up actions taken by each agency under the department.
"The department is still awaiting the results and findings of the investigation," she said.
She added that discussions will be held with the agencies to determine proactive steps to prevent future incidents.
