INDIVIDUAL athletes from Selangor who win a gold medal at the upcoming 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI) will be rewarded with RM10,000 each, says Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
The reward marks a nearly three-fold (300%) increase compared to the reward for the 20th Sukma, where an individual gold medal winner was awarded RM3,500.
For gold medal winners in team sports at the 21st Sukma, the Selangor Mentri Besar said RM5,000 per person will be given to teams with less than five persons and RM3,000 per person for teams with more than five persons.
His announcement was met with rousing cheers by state athletes at the flag handover ceremony to the Selangor contingent heading to Sukma XXI that will be held in Sarawak this month.
“Selangor will be sending a contingent of 1,050 people comprising 704 athletes, 212 officers and 133 secretariat members,” said Selangor youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi in his speech.
“We are targeting a haul of 61 gold medals and will be competing in all 37 sports.”
Mohd Najwan will be leading the contingent. His deputy will be state deputy secretary (management) Datuk Mohd Yazid Sairi.
The event, organised by the Selangor Sports Council (MSNS), was held on Saturday (Aug 3) at Dewan Raja Muda Musa in Section 7, Shah Alam.
The 21st Sukma features 37 sports and 484 events. It is scheduled to take place from Aug 17 to 24, across nine cities and towns, including Bintulu, Kuching, Miri and Sibu.
